Section B- Film Marketing

Section B- Question 2
What methods does film marketing use to make its products appeal to its audiences?
refer to "I Daniel Blake".

In the film poster a lot of reviews have been placed in the background to almost completely fill it. This is to interest the audience as they will see a lot of good reviews and instantly think it is a good film worth watching.
The use of five stars in all of the reviews further convinces the audience to watch the film, as it is indicating that it has high market quality and has had very positive feedback on all of its audiences.

The main character, Daniel, isn't in centre frame. The fact that he is in the right corner expresses to the viewers that he isn't very powerful even if he has his fist clenched in the air. This symbolises he could be fighting for power or trying to reach somewhere in society, with his viewpoints and opinions.

The film poster has very dark and low-lit colours which could symbolise underlying sadness. This allows the audience to foreshadow that it may not be a very happy film. The blank background behind the reviews appears quite grim, contrasting majorly with the good reviews which give it an uplifting feel.

Daniel's facial expression is almost emotionless, but also a little sad which makes the audience more intrigued in who he is and want to watch the film to discover what will happen. His mouth is frowning and he looks disappointed as he looks directly towards the audience, with eye contact in centre screen.

There is a lot of red and black in the font and background, possibly symbolising danger, blood or death. In this case I don't think the red would symbolise love or romance as it is too darkly lit, but it may show underlying love or feelings which cannot be exposed.

The director is Ken Loach who has a socially critical directing style and socialist ideals which are evident in his films in his treatment of social issues such as poverty, homelessness and labour rights.
This would already give the audience an indication or expectation as to what sort of film he would have produced before they have even watched it.

In the left hand corner it can be clearly seen that the film is not recommended for anyone under the age of 15 based on the subject matter of the film, as it is based on labour rights which most people at such a young age wouldn't understand. This shows that the film is going to involve quite critical, social views in society.
