how gender is represented in media

Explore how gender is represented  in at least two examples from  the media ( TV,magazines , music videos , games, , film, TV advertising etc) .

You should look at how the media texts reinforce or challenge positive or negative stereotypesabout men and/or women  and how this connects with the genre, purpose ( to entertain , inform , sell a product etc.)  and narrative ( story ) of the media text.

You should try and use examples of  technical codes ( e.g  camera angles, use of colour , sounds, props, costume , facial expression etc. ) to support your points .

Stereotypical "girl"

The video below advertising the brand Always tries to express to viewers how society depicts girls, for example the idea that being "like a girl" is an insult. Since we could remember men have always been represented as having the more dominant role, as they are strong and courageous, fighting for the prey like a lion whilst the woman stays at home and waits patiently. With time things have changed and women have started to feel offended by the lack of control they have over simple tasks, for example women feel like they are unable to do the same jobs as men because they simply aren't "fit enough". This has arisen a lot of conflict over equality between the two genders. Women want to feel more powerful but men constantly make them feel as if they are powerless.
The video also shows how young people feel about girls, and then how older people feel. From this we can see that children have a much more innocent mindset as they don't feel that being told they run "like a girl" is an insult. On the other hand, if you said to a woman she doesn't dress "girly" enough she could get offended because she could want to dress more masculine instead of wearing a little pink skirt to prove her gender. This advert is trying to show to women that they should be proud of being a "girl". Always sells women's sanitary products which means that mostly women watch the advert, which fits well as they are the target audience. If Always sold products for men too it would be unfair for them as they would feel discriminated or left out, hinting how women feel when they are unable to have the same roles in society as men.

Another depiction of women is being seen as "sexual objects" in certain videos, for example, in the music video below of Robin Thicke's song and nothing more from certain men. In some of the latest music videos they have been seen wearing little to nothing and twerking or showing off their body whilst men linger around them. This shows the lack of respect that certain women have for themselves, that they would be seen as worthless, most likely depicted by men. This as a way is saying that women should sit still and look pretty without doing anything but pleasing men.
